The popular teeth whitening procedure is seen, by some, as a straightforward cosmetic dental treatment that can perform miracles, turning badly stained teeth into beautiful white ones.
Unfortunately, this is not the full story. The reality is that, whilst this is a highly effective treatment for teeth that are stained or discoloured to a reasonable degree, its effect on heavily stained teeth is more likely to be limited.
While there may be some improvement on heavily stained or discoloured teeth following this procedure, it is unlikely that you will be able to achieve the degree of whiteness that you had, perhaps, hoped for.
Porcelain veneers
If you have been considering having your teeth whitened, and currently have badly stained or discoloured teeth, the above information may not be what you were hoping to hear. All is not lost, however.
At The Lighthouse Dental Practice, we are pleased to offer an alternative treatment that really can give you the white smile that you are looking for, and that is through the fitting of dental veneers.
Veneers are usually made from a very thin layer of porcelain which is produced in the shape of the tooth’s front surface. It is a little like a false fingernail in some respects, but with a few differences.
The procedure
Unlike false fingernails, which are simply glued on top of the current nail, veneers are, instead, used to replace the discoloured surface enamel of the affected teeth. This does involve having your teeth prepared at our Ipswich dental surgery; however, this should not cause discomfort as it is performed using a powerful local anaesthetic.
Once a very fine layer has been ‘shaved’ from the front of the teeth, using a piece of equipment known as a ‘burr’, impressions are then taken which are used, by a dental laboratory, to prepare the veneers. This can take a week or so and temporary veneers will be fitted to protect the teeth in the meantime. Once the new veneers have been returned to our Ipswich practice, you will be recalled to have them fitted. This is done using a powerful adhesive and the veneers are then trimmed and polished to leave you with natural-looking, beautiful white teeth.
If you are unhappy with the colour of your teeth, why not arrange a consultation with our cosmetic dentist? They will, following a full examination, recommend the correct course of treatment to help you to rediscover the great looking white smile that you may have thought was gone forever.
