Should You Have Your Teeth Straightened? Advice from our Dentists

Is Wearing Braces Really Worth It? Our Ipswich Cosmetic Dentists Discuss

Wearing dental braces may not be on many people’s ‘to do list’, but the fact is that more and more adults are turning to the new types of invisible braces which can straighten teeth in greater comfort, and more discreetly than ever before.

These braces are usually one of two types; either they work along similar lines to traditional braces, but use finer tooth coloured materials, or, they come in the shape of almost invisible transparent trays which are worn directly over the teeth.

At The Lighthouse Dental Practice in Ipswich, we are always happy to discuss this cosmetic dental procedure with our patients in more detail, but, today, we offer a few reasons why you may wish to consider this treatment more generally.

Cosmetic benefits

This is the number one reason that most people have for straightening their teeth. There is no doubt that a nice even smile is preferable to one that reveals a set of crooked or uneven teeth. This also sometimes help to boost people’s confidence and has been shown to be beneficial when meeting people for the first time. It is said that people make many judgements about us within the first few seconds of meeting and a great-looking smile can only be helpful in this.

From a cosmetic perspective, it is worth mentioning that many of our Ipswich patients also have their teeth whitened once this treatment is complete, in order to improve their smile even further.

Health benefits

Although fewer patients probably consider this as a reason to have their teeth straightened, there are a number of practical benefits to it too.

Badly crooked teeth and additional pressures can lead to jaw pain and even a clicking jaw. This is due to the additional strain that can be placed on the TMJ (temporomandibular joint). Having an even set of teeth can help to avoid this potentially uncomfortable problem.

Straighter teeth are also easier to clean, with fewer spaces for food and harmful bacteria to become trapped. There is also a strong likelihood that you will take time to look after your teeth better if they look nice, in an effort to keep them that way for as long as possible.

Whether your teeth are crooked, overlap, or you have a cross-bite, modern invisible braces are well worth considering.
