Sparkling teeth is one of the best ways in which you can improve your smile. However, daily wear and tear can leave them looking stained and dull. So, we recently invited guest lifestyle blogger Sarah at Style & Decor to try out our teeth whitening at home service. Here’s what she had to say:
The Invitation
When I was invited to Lighthouse Dental Practice to experience their teeth whitening at home service, I jumped at the chance. I could think of nothing better than the opportunity to brighten my pearly whites with an effective stain remover. I’ve definitely put my teeth through their paces over the years. So, I was looking forward to brightening my smile again. I then hot-footed it to this practice for my first consultation.
Leading dental surgeon Dr Tocca met me at their High Street Ipswich practice and took me to one of their treatment rooms. Once I was sitting comfortably in the dental chair, he explained the initial process for their teeth whitening at home service. This was the check-up in order for the dentist to make sure my teeth and gums would be healthy enough for a whitening treatment. This procedure also reassured me that I would benefit from a full dental assessment first. Dr Tocca showed me which colour I could expect to achieve from my teeth whitening at home – A1 to A2. This is pretty white – in fact, these feature at the top of their chart!
I must admit, I don’t trust over-the-counter teeth whiteners, because I prefer to deal with a professional. Dentistry is a highly regulated industry, so it made perfect sense to use this safe route. I also think there’s no guarantee those over-the-counter products remove stains effectively. And it was important for me to discover whether my discolouration can be treated in this way or whether it perhaps comes from within the tooth (intrinsic). Only a dentist could tell me this. In addition, if there was a problem such as this, Dr Tocca could then advise me on other steps I should take.
Using state-of-the-art digital scanning, Dr Tocca scanned my teeth and surrounding gum tissue using an innovative hand-held device. This actually creates the upper and lower impressions. In fact, the process is really impressive! I could see a 3-D view of my upper and low teeth and jaw forming on the computer screen as the results downloaded. The dentist then emailed these impressions to a specialist lab to create highly accurate mouth trays for me. I would be using these daily for my teeth whitening at home so a good fit would be vital.
A week or so later, I returned for my bespoke fitting. Both trays fitted perfectly and Dr Tocca then explained how I should use my special teeth whitening at home pack. The instructions were so easy! Dr Tocca even gave me a handy teeth whitening at home guide I could refer to. When I got home, I read through this carefully and put my whitening syringes in my fridge.
Every evening, my easy teeth whitening routine began. I brushed my teeth thoroughly and flossed before use. I then applied the bleaching product through a syringe to each tooth mould in the mouth tray. You’ll find you’re given ten syringes, each of which you can choose to use once or even twice a day. The key is to empty the contents of one syringe across both mouth trays. However, you do need to make sure you don’t overfill each tooth in your moulds. So, Dr Tocca advised me to fill up to one third of each ‘tooth’ with the gel. You won’t want more than this as the solution could overflow. As a result, this might irritate your gums or even bleach your gum area. And I had no problems at all and the instructions were easy to follow.
Then, when my mouth trays were ready, I simply popped each one in. The only difficulty for me was trying not to speak for 90 mins or so (up to 2 hours is advised) with the trays in place! Then my teeth whitening at home began working its magic. Afterwards, I simply rinsed the trays with warm water, so they would be ready to use again the following day.
Teeth whitening at home can make the perfect choice if you like to do things yourself in your own time. And there’s no doubt that a brighter smile can make you feel so good. I found my treatment was easy to use, which was so important to me and I needed this to work for me within my busy schedule. I also felt confident that, if I had any problems, I could get in touch with Lighthouse Dental Practice.
I am so pleased with the results, which came with very little effort on my part. I’ve put my teeth through a lot over the years, which had taken its toll. However, now I feel a lot more confident when I smile and my teeth are definitely a lot brighter and the effect looks natural, too.
